ADX (14): is there a trend worth trading, or just chop?

Strength first, direction second

ADX is built from two directional movement lines. +DI measures how much of the recent range came from higher highs, -DI from lower lows. ADX is a smoothed measure of the gap between them, so a hard sell-off and a hard rally both print a high ADX. Reading ADX as bullish is the most common mistake made with it.

On the SIMMENT dashboard the tile shows ADX 14 with TREND above 20 and RANGE below, plus the side taken from +DI against -DI. A rising ADX with +DI on top is a trend with buyers in control; a rising ADX with -DI on top is the same strength, sellers in control.

What the number changes in practice

Under 20 the market has no persistent direction. Breakout entries fail more often, and mean-reversion at the edges of the range is the better study. Between 20 and 25 a trend is forming but not proven. Above 25 pullbacks into EMA 50 or a prior level tend to hold, and trailing a stop pays more than a fixed target.

ADX lags, because it is an average of averages. It confirms a move that has already started; it does not call the turn. Falling ADX from a high level means the trend is losing force, not that price is about to reverse.

How the SIMMENT desk uses ADX
