Volume: confirmation, not direction

Volume is the amount of base asset traded per candle. It confirms moves rather than predicting them: a breakout on volume above the 20-bar average is more trustworthy than one on a quiet tape. SIMMENT labels volume above 1.5x its 20-period average as HIGH and lets it amplify whichever side already leads the vote.

The 20-bar average rule

Compare the current candle to the average of the last 20. Above 1.5x is a real participation spike; below 0.5x is a dead tape where moves can reverse on a single order. Time of day matters: the New York session prints two to three times the volume of late Asia on the same pair.

Volume and false breaks

A break of a 20-bar high on low volume is the classic trap. Institutions do not chase; they let retail push through the level and sell into it. The desk shows the whale tape next to volume so you can see whether size showed up at the break.

How the SIMMENT desk uses volume

The engine adds one vote to the leading side when volume exceeds 1.5x its SMA 20. The setup filter does the same with the last five candles versus the last twenty. Volume never creates a signal by itself.
