Coinbase Premium: US spot demand in one number

The Coinbase premium is the BTC price on Coinbase minus the same print on Kraken, as a percentage (Kraken is the reference venue on SIMMENT; Binance is not reachable from the server). A positive premium means US spot buyers are bidding richer than the rest of the world, a classic institutional and ETF-flow footprint; a negative premium shows US selling or weekend illiquidity. Tiny values such as -0.008% are noise and read NEUTRAL on the desk.

Why the premium matters

Coinbase is where US institutions and ETF custodians trade spot. When their demand is strong the venue trades at a premium, and sustained premiums have coincided with the strongest accumulation phases. When the premium goes clearly negative during a rally, the rally is being led by offshore leverage, which is fragile.

Pitfalls

Weekends and US holidays distort the number because Coinbase liquidity thins. Also, a large premium can mark crowded positioning right before a shakeout. Read it with the liquidation tape.

How the SIMMENT desk uses it

The CB PREMIUM tile shows the live spread with a NEUTRAL label inside roughly ±0.05% and a directional label outside it. It is context for the Market Pulse commentary and not a vote in the setup score.

Quick answers

What is a "high" Coinbase premium?

Sustained readings above about 0.1% during US hours are notable; single prints mean little.
